Most systems west of I-35 are aerobic, checked about every four months by law. Those visits show the sludge, so a pump-out gets booked when the tank needs one.

Conventional tanks usually go three to five years between pump-outs. On the eastern clay, aim for the shorter end.

Which side of I-35 you live on decides what's in your yard. To the west, thin soil over limestone means most homes run aerobic units with spray heads, and aerobic septic pumping takes a little more care than a plain tank.
To the east, heavy Houston Black clay leaves a drainfield with no spare room, so an overfull tank matters more. We pump both kinds and match the job to the ground under it.
On The West Side: Aerobic Units And Their Parts
If you're out along Hamilton Pool Road, RM 620 or the hills above Lake Travis, rock often sits a few inches under your grass, so you likely have an aerobic unit instead of a standard drainfield. Those units run on moving parts (an aerator, pumps and a control panel), and Texas law keeps them under a maintenance contract so those parts get checked.
We never pump an aerobic tank dry, because the bacteria left in it are what treat the water.
On The East Side: Clay That Barely Drains
Along SH-130 and out toward Del Valle and Mustang Ridge, your yard likely sits on that clay. It cracks when it's dry, barely drains when it's wet, and the state rates it unsuitable for a standard drainfield. With no spare capacity in the ground, we'd rather pump your tank a little early than a little late.
