Two Hays County homes a few miles apart can need very different septic care, because of what's under them. The soil changes at about I-35, where the Balcones line runs.
West of the interstate, around Dripping Springs, a thin layer covers limestone, so aerobic units with spray heads are the norm. East of it, on the east side of Kyle and Buda, it's Houston Black clay, which barely drains.
