In the resort era a century ago, the Crazy Water wells made this a national destination, and the downtown still has the historic bones to prove it. The Baker Hotel, the landmark at the edge of downtown, has been the subject of a major, long-running restoration, and when it finally reopens it'll bring the skyline back to something the town hasn't seen in generations. The Crazy Water tradition never left either: the Famous Mineral Water Company has been bottling out of historic wells in town since 1904, and the brand is still on Texas grocery shelves.
Lake Mineral Wells State Park sits east of town with hiking, paddling, and the climbing routes at Penitentiary Hollow that have a real following among Texas climbers. What pulls people to Mineral Wells now is that historic character at a price nothing closer to Fort Worth can touch, with pre-war homes on streets that would cost three or four times as much in Granbury or Weatherford. The trade-offs are the distance from the metro and the rocky ground that decides what every home's septic system can do. That last part is where we come in.
