What Are FOGS?
September 5, 2025
FOGS are fats, oils, and greases, and they play a bigger role in wastewater than most people realize. Whether you are a homeowner or run a busy commercial kitchen, FOGS can create serious issues for plumbing, septic systems, and city sewers when they are not managed correctly.
Why FOGS Matter in Wastewater
When FOGS enter your drains, they may seem harmless at first. However, once they cool down, they solidify and cling to the inside of pipes. Over time, this buildup narrows the passageway and slows the flow of water. In severe cases, blockages can form and lead to costly repairs.
FOGS can also slip past traps or interceptors and enter septic systems. Once inside, they coat components and make it harder for wastewater to move through the system. In commercial environments, these problems multiply quickly, especially in restaurants or facilities that prepare food at a high volume.
Common Sources of FOGS
FOGS come from everyday items that many people wash down the drain without thinking. Cooking oils, butter, meat drippings, dairy products, and salad dressings all contribute to the buildup. Even soaps and cleaners containing fats can add to the problem. Knowing where FOGS come from makes it easier to take simple steps that prevent issues down the line.
How to Prevent Issues
The best way to manage FOGS is to keep them out of your drains in the first place. Pour cooled fats and oils into containers and dispose of them in the trash instead of rinsing them away. Use sink strainers to catch food particles and wipe pans with paper towels before washing. For commercial kitchens, regular pumping and scheduled maintenance on grease traps or interceptors are essential.
At HomeField, we see firsthand how FOGS can affect both residential and commercial systems. Staying proactive keeps your wastewater flowing smoothly, protects your investment, and avoids the stress of unexpected emergencies.
