Proper Access Opening for Septic Tank Pumping

Proper Access

August 19, 2025

Maintaining your septic system starts with proper pumping, and that begins with proper access. At HomeField Onsite Environmental, we’re big believers in doing things the right way, and that includes using the proper openings on your septic tank for pumping.

Why Proper Access Matters

Pumping through the actual septic tank lids allows us to fully clean the tank—liquids, solids, all of it. It gives us direct access to the full compartments, so we can get the job done thoroughly. Trying to pump through small openings, like cleanouts or inspection ports, just doesn’t cut it. Those spots aren’t built for full-service cleaning. Solids stay behind, and over time that buildup causes backups, clogs, and costly problems.

If you want your system to run right and last longer, you’ve got to pump it properly through the proper access point.

A Look at Lid Types Over Time

The type of access your system has depends on when your tank was installed:

  • 1960s–1970s: These tanks often have one big rectangular “coffin-style” lid that usually requires major digging to reach.
  • 1970s–1990s: One-compartment tanks became more common, typically with an 18-inch round access point centered on the tank.
  • 1990s–Now: Newer systems are usually two-compartment tanks, each with its own 24-inch lid for full access.

Understanding your system means you can service it the right way, instead of guessing whether it’s clean.

Why You Should Consider Risers

Proper Installation of Septic Tank Risers

If your lids sit underground, risers make access simple. These extensions bring the access points up to or just below the surface. That means no digging every time it’s time for service. We install high-quality risers built to last and sealed tight for safety and durability.

Plus, you’ll always know exactly where your tank is—and you’ll be more likely to keep up on regular maintenance because the lids are easy to see and reach.

The Payoff of Proper Access

  • Complete Pumping: No missed waste, no shortcuts—just a clean, healthy system.
  • Better Inspections: We can spot small issues early and fix them before they become major repairs.
  • Lower Costs Long-Term: Clean tanks don’t clog or fail as easily. That means fewer emergencies and longer system life.

Good access isn’t optional—it’s essential. Taking the time to pump through the correct lids and installing risers if needed can make all the difference. It protects your investment, your property, and your peace of mind.

At HomeField Onsite Environmental, we’re here to do the job right the first time—because your system deserves more than just a surface-level fix.
