Irrigation Lines Should NOT Be Near Your Septic System

Irrigation Lines and Septic Systems

Why You Shouldn’t Place Irrigation Lines Over Your Septic Tank

At HomeField, we know how important it is to protect your septic system. One mistake we see often is homeowners placing irrigation lines over their septic tank or drainfield. This can cause long-term damage, lead to costly repairs, and interrupt your system’s function. Here’s why it’s not worth the risk and how to avoid it.

Protect Your Septic Tank from Excess Water

Your septic system is designed to treat and filter wastewater at a steady, natural pace. When irrigation lines are installed above the tank or drainfield, all that added water from sprinklers or drip lines starts to saturate the soil. That extra moisture makes it harder for the system to function and can lead to slow drains, backups, and even complete failure.

Oversaturated soil can also cause erosion, making the ground less stable and potentially shifting components of your septic system. We’ve seen firsthand how irrigation in the wrong spot can wreck a system, and the repair bills that follow are never small.

We Locate Major Utilities – But Irrigation Lines Are Your Responsibility

Whenever we dig, we contact Arizona 811 to mark major utilities like electric, water, and gas lines. However, secondary lines such as irrigation fall outside that system’s coverage. That means it’s your responsibility to know where those lines are before any septic work begins.

If your irrigation lines cross septic components, service work can damage them. Repairing those breaks can be expensive and time-consuming. If you’re not sure where your lines are, we’ll gladly work with your landscaper or gardener to plan and protect everything correctly.

Prioritize Long-Term Health of Your Septic System

Keeping irrigation lines and landscaping features away from your septic tank and drainfield is one of the simplest ways to protect your system. A smart layout helps avoid damage, reduces erosion, and keeps your septic system running smoothly for years to come.

At HomeField, we’re here to help you make smart decisions about your system from the ground up. Whether it’s maintenance, pumping, or helping you plan around your property, we’re just a call away.
