Eco-Friendly Laundry Hacks
September 14, 2025
Greening your laundry routine sounds great—but do eco-friendly products like detergent sheets and dryer balls actually work? Let’s break it down and see how these options stack up, especially when it comes to septic system care.
Laundry Detergent Sheets: A Greener Option?
Laundry detergent sheets have become a popular eco-friendly alternative to traditional liquid detergents. These thin, pre-measured sheets eliminate the need for bulky plastic bottles, which helps cut down on the millions of tons of plastic waste generated each year in the U.S.
They work in both hot and cold water and are compatible with all types of washing machines, including high-efficiency models. Many brands also match the cost of pods or liquid detergent, making them an accessible eco-friendly option.
But how well do they clean? Consumer Reports tested several leading brands and found that most fell short on performance. Earth Breeze was the only brand to score above average in stain removal. So, while they’re great for light loads and reducing plastic use, they may not be strong enough for heavy-duty cleaning.
Septic System Considerations
Detergent sheets often contain fewer harsh chemicals and dissolve completely in water, which makes them less likely to cause issues in septic systems. They also offer better dosing control compared to liquid detergent, helping reduce buildup inside your tank or pipes. While their cleaning power may not match traditional detergents yet, they offer a safer choice for septic care.
Dryer Balls: A Natural Fabric Softener
Dryer balls, typically made of wool or plastic, are designed to soften clothes without added chemicals. They bounce between fabrics, preventing clumps and reducing drying time by up to 25 percent. This can lower your electric bill and extend the life of your clothing.
Unlike traditional fabric softeners or dryer sheets, dryer balls leave no residue behind. This makes them a better option for septic systems, which can be negatively affected by the chemicals in many softeners.
Sustainability Bonus
Wool dryer balls last for hundreds of loads and are fully biodegradable. They are quieter than plastic versions and considered the more environmentally responsible choice overall.
Are Eco-Friendly Laundry Hacks Worth Considering?
If you’re trying to reduce waste and care for your septic system at the same time, detergent sheets and dryer balls are worth exploring. While they may not completely replace your favorite products, they offer simple, affordable ways to be more environmentally conscious.
