Debunking Septic Myths
September 22, 2025
When it comes to septic systems, misinformation is everywhere. Believing common septic myths can lead to major problems and expensive repairs. At HomeField, we are here to set the record straight and help you take care of your system the right way. Let’s break down the top myths we hear from customers all the time.
Pumping Every 2 to 3 Years Is a Must
One of the most common septic myths is the idea that you only need to pump your tank when there is a problem. The truth is that if you wait for a backup, you have already waited too long.
Septic tanks work by separating solids, oils, and liquids. Over time, solids settle at the bottom and build up. If they are not pumped out regularly, they will eventually overflow into your drainfield and cause clogs. That is when things get messy—slow drains, backups, and costly repairs are usually right behind.
Pumping every two to three years is preventive maintenance. It is not optional. Think of it like changing your vehicle’s oil. It is a small investment that protects the entire system.
“Flushable” Wipes Are Not Septic-Safe
Another dangerous myth is that “flushable” wipes are safe to use just because the label says so. In reality, these wipes do not break down like toilet paper. They stay intact, clump together, and clog up your pipes, tank, and even your drainfield.
Whether you are on a septic system or connected to city sewer, wipes are a bad idea. They create blockages that can lead to service calls, repairs, and major system strain.
Stick to the 3 P’s: pee, poo, and (toilet) paper. Everything else should go in the trash.
Additives Are Not a Substitute for Pumping
Some people believe that pouring a bacteria booster or enzyme product into the tank can take the place of regular pumping. This is one of the most misleading myths in the industry.
While additives claim to support bacterial balance, many actually disrupt the natural bacteria your tank relies on. Worse, they do not remove any solids. No product can replace the physical removal of waste that happens during pumping.
If you want your septic system to last, pumping is the only guaranteed way to prevent solids from building up and damaging your drainfield.
Know the Facts and Protect Your System
Septic systems are built to last, but only if they are properly maintained. Falling for common septic myths can shorten your system’s lifespan and lead to expensive, preventable problems.
