Creative Landscaping Living on Septic

Creative Ways to Love Your Landscaping

Let’s Get Creative

As a homeowner, you know curb appeal matters. But if your property has a septic system, your landscaping plans need to include a little extra thought. With some smart choices, you can protect your system and still have a beautiful yard you love.

Avoid Covering Your Septic Components

Do not cover your septic tank or disposal field with concrete, pavers, or other hardscape features.

Do NOT Pave or Landscape Over Septic Systems

Tanks
Covering your septic tank makes it harder to access the lids for pumping and maintenance. This can lead to corrosion inside the tank and overflow into the disposal field. If you plan to install pavers in the area, make sure you have risers on your tank. Risers bring access points to the surface so we can pump and clean the system without digging up your landscaping.

Disposal Fields
Your disposal field needs to breathe. It treats wastewater just beneath the surface and should always be in an open, unused area. Never park or drive over your disposal field—doing so can crush pipes, cause settling, and damage the system.

Be Mindful of Plantings

Trees and large shrubs may look great, but their roots can destroy a septic system. In Arizona, roots travel long distances underground to find water, and your disposal field is a prime target. Over time, they can break through pipes or wrap around components.

Plant trees and deep-rooted plants well away from your septic area. Shallow-rooted grasses or native ground cover are better options nearby.

Know Where Your System Is

Before building a shed, driveway, patio, or pool, you need to know exactly where your septic tank and disposal field are located. Many homeowners know the tank’s location but not the full extent of the field. Knowing both helps you avoid costly mistakes.

Keep in mind that disposal fields eventually need to be replaced—typically after 30 to 40 years. When planning your yard, leave enough space to relocate the field when that time comes. It’s a lot easier to plan ahead than to remove mature trees or tear out concrete later.

Manage Water Flow Wisely

Make sure surface water drains away from your septic area. Never allow water to pool or sit for extended periods over your tank or disposal field. If you have flood irrigation, ensure it is properly managed and not oversaturating the system.

Excess water in the wrong places can overwhelm your septic system and reduce its ability to treat wastewater effectively.

Just because you’re on septic doesn’t mean you can’t love your landscaping. With a little planning and smart placement, you can have a yard that’s both beautiful and septic friendly.
